Emergency Contraception in Dubai and the UAE
Important distinction — read this first: emergency contraception prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex. Abortion medicines end an established pregnancy. They are different medicines, used at different times, under different rules. This page covers only emergency contraception. For abortion-related information, see our main UAE guide.
Last updated: October 2026. General information only — not medical advice. For personal advice, speak to a licensed doctor or pharmacist promptly, as timing matters.
What emergency contraception is
Emergency contraception is used after unprotected sex or when contraception fails (for example a broken condom or missed pills). It works by delaying or preventing ovulation — it does not work if a pregnancy is already established. Common search names include “morning-after pill”, “i-pill” / “ipill in Dubai”, and “72-hour pill”.
Because it is time-sensitive, do not delay: contact a licensed pharmacist or doctor as soon as possible after unprotected sex to discuss your options.
What emergency contraception is NOT
- It is not an abortion pill. It cannot end an established pregnancy.
- It is not the same as mifepristone or misoprostol — those are different medicines used in different clinical situations (see our medicine guide).
- It is not a regular contraceptive method — it is for emergencies, not routine use. For ongoing contraception, see our contraceptive pills guide.
Availability in the UAE
Product availability and prescription requirements can change. Ask a UAE-licensed pharmacist or doctor about which products are currently available and what the current requirements are. Do not rely on old forum posts, and do not buy from unverified online sellers or social-media accounts.
After unprotected sex involving assault
If the unprotected sex was non-consensual, your health and safety come first: consider urgent medical care and support services. In the UAE you can call 999 for police assistance. A clinician can also discuss emergency contraception, STI screening, and documentation of the assault.
When to get urgent medical help
Severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling very unwell after unprotected sex are reasons to seek urgent care — call 998 for an ambulance in the UAE or go to the nearest emergency department.
Frequently asked questions
Is the i-pill available in Dubai?
Ask a UAE-licensed pharmacist about current availability and requirements — these can change, and old online answers may be out of date.
Does the morning-after pill cause an abortion?
No. Emergency contraception works before a pregnancy is established; it does not end an existing pregnancy. That is the key difference from abortion medicines.
Can I just order it online?
Use licensed UAE pharmacies and follow their dispensing rules. Avoid unverified sellers on messaging apps and social media — counterfeit medicines are a real risk.

Update — September 2026: In its ‘Guidelines on expanding contraceptive options’ (23 September 2026), the World Health Organization added mifepristone as an additional emergency contraception option. As with all contraceptive methods, availability in the UAE depends on national regulations — ask a licensed healthcare provider or pharmacist in the UAE which options are registered here.
